The Addiction

I got Netflix and suddenly life is good. I watch it before work, after work and any spare weekend moments are spent searching for new releases or hidden gems. Undeniably you do have to skip through some rubbish to get to the good stuff, although maybe I should give 'Killer Clowns From Outer Space' a chance...If you have a love for little known films and TV series that haven't quite made it over the pond on to attainable channels you will be in heaven. In the first free month my greatest discovery was Arrested Development which is a fantastic American Sit-com starring Jason Bateman and Michael Cera; it was made a few years ago and shown late night on the BBC, when it is really prime time weekend material. It is seriously a laugh a minute.

Moving into the second month and the excitement may have died down a little, but after a quiet weekend I experienced the full power of Netflix and spent hours watching different movies, old films that I had never got round to watching and even some new. I just watched Drive, starring Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling; two hot names in Hollywood that have quickly ticked off a number of genres in the space of a few years. Brilliant performances and a surprisingly simple plot that captured the mentality and violence of gang crime. So while I had been daydreaming about moving to LA to live the American dream earlier today....now I am not so sure, it doesn't look as idyllic as I previously imagined. It did however inspire a new dream of becoming a racing driver!

The Job Hunt

The Job Hunt is a long and twisted tale full of depression, exasperation and pain; however it may surprise you to know that eventually it will have a happy ending...
I finished Uni last year and went into denial by moving into my housemates new house and continuing to work in Brighton until the job was up and I knew my time was too. I moved back to my half room in Ricky and thought that everything would work out in the end, which it did...seven months later. I spent seven long months temping, interviewing, searching and sulking. However, once I decided enough was enough everything started to come together.
I spent the first two weeks of May commuting into central London for a work experience placement in a top PR company and I have finished this month with a full time job at a local production company. Very different jobs and environments, but both in the media and fields I am interested in. I do miss being right by Oxford Street and the excitement of such a big office with so much going on, but I definitely do not miss being breathed on by sweaty commuters whilst the train sits at another red signal...
It seems to be a good time for people looking for work, just before all the students graduate; three of my friends have also landed jobs in the past week. My contract is only 4 months, so I may well be back in that horrid position of fighting off the masses of media hungry job hunters. My tips and what I must remember for my future unemployment is that you need to be 100% dedicated to job searching and to the jobs you go for, there is no point in looking at a job site for an hour a day - finding work is a full time job! Sign up to Guardianjobs and all the recruiters you come across, find job sites specific to your field and make sure you get the email alerts. Don't just sit on facebook and twitter wasting time when you could be networking and looking for job alerts.
It may be cliche and annoying but you are selling yourself, so remember the three P's; be polite, persistent and patient.
Good luck, you are going to need it!

The Fat Diet

I have a new diet for all those desperately seeking the perfect recipe for weight loss; eat fat! Not bad fats, but good fats. The fat has to be natural so no saturated fats or processed food. My friend from the food industry rants and raves about the evil carbohydrates that have infiltrated our lives and especially the sugars that he believes will be deemed as bad as smoking in 20 years time. This does make me giggle; the thought that you might need to be over a certain age to responsibly buy a chocolate bar or the image of kids sneakily eating a bag of haribo down an ill-lit alleyway.
Anyway he has started his new fat diet and so far he has lost a stone and a half. So where's the science?
I don't really know, because I am not a scientist, but I do know that your body has to work extra hard to burn off protein and fat, so by eating fat you are making your body exercise itself to digest the food. This is why the Dukan diet has proved so successful for all those skinny celebs. I did the Dukan diet before Christmas and it certainly does work, but it is not particularly pleasant as the first week is just protein and from there you start to introduce certain vegetables; it is meant to be a complete lifestyle change, a diet for life. BUT there is no way I could stick to that, I prefer everything in moderation. However if you are one of those people that can't do moderation, i.e. you buy a packet of biscuits and they are gone within an hour, don't buy the biscuits!
So if you feel like treating yourself, go for a big juicy steak and ditch the crisps and sweets.
